She loves the land. Mattie Evans grew up in the Flint Hills of Kansas. Although her family has lost their ranch, she still calls this land home. A skilled young veterinarian, she struggles to gain the confidence of the local ranchers. Fortunately, her best friend and staunchest supporter is John McCray, owner of the Lightning M Ranch. They both love the ranch, and can't imagine living anywhere but in the Flint Hills. He's haunted by it. Gil McCray, John's estranged son, is a pro football player living in California. The ranch is where his mother died and where every aspect of the tallgrass prairie stirs unwanted memories of his older brother's fatal accident. Gil decides leaving the ranch is the best solution for his ailing father and his own ailing heart. But he doesn't count on falling in love. Falling in love isn't an option. Or is it? When Mattie is called in to save a horse injured in a terrible accident, she finds herself unwillingly tossed into the middle of a family conflict. Secret pain, secret passions, and secret agendas play out against the beautiful landscapes as love leads to some unexpected conclusions about forgiveness and renewal.

This was a great read - the author did a super job of developing both the characters and the plot. The fact that I got this free from Amazon for my Kindle was a real plus.

My synopsis:
Gil McCray left home for 20 years in order to escape the guilt he felt for having betrayed his older brother, Frank, the night Frank was killed by a drunk driver. Gil went on to become a famous quarterback for the NFL San Francisco 49ers. Then his horse Dusty was injured badly in an accident caused by a drunken driver, bringing Gil back home to Kansas where he met the female veterinarian Mattie Evans, who'd be in charge of trying to heal Dusty. Mattie's sister Jenna was the girl with whom Gil had betrayed his brother 20 years ago, but they (Mattie and Jenna) were nowhere alike. On his second trip home, Gil stayed a longer time, got to know Mattie and found he more than liked her; but she didn't like his lifestyle nor the fact that he was unwilling to live in his old home town, which Mattie loved. It took meeting Jenna again, learning why he had so many issues with his dad and facing his feelings about that night twenty years ago before Gil could really know what he wanted to do with his life.

I really don't appreciate "preaching" - but it wasn't as bad as it could have been.

Snow Melts in Spring Seasons of the Tallgrass Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Deborah Vogts Emily Durante Zondervan Books Reviews

Snow Melts in Spring is a story full of surprises. Vogts has spun a fascinating novel about a women veterinarian, an NFL football player, and an irascible old man. For a backdrop she uses the Flint Hills of Kansas, an area I've never visited, but after reading this novel I feel I've been there. Vogts' loving description of the land has given me a view of Kansas quite different from that depicted in The Wizard of Oz.
I love reading stories that inform as well as entertain, and Snow Melts in Spring fills that bill handily. The insider accounts of horses and veterinary medicine set this book apart from others I've read. I was especially entranced by Vogts' use of Gil McCray's football background. His point of view added a fascinating dimension to the novel.
The story begins when the main character, Mattie Evans, is called in to save a badly injured horse. Unknowing, she finds herself in the midst of a family conflict in which secrets and guilt must be played out before the heartwarming conclusion. I must confess I had tears in my eyes when I read the ending.
Vogts has created memorable characters in an unusual setting. I recommend this book.
Deborah's artistic way with words is wonderful, truly capturing every scene. I felt I was right in the middle of it, with all my senses in tune. The circumstances that Mattie faced with wanting to hold on to her homeland, yet facing the decision of having to give it up for the man she loves, is somewhat similar to situations I find myself in today. I felt a personal connection with Mattie and was quite emotionally caught up with her predicament. The ending spoke volumes about Mattie's trust in the Lord. I was very emotionally invested in the characters, to the point that my heart ached at the thought of how each character would cope with the prospect of drastic changes and the possibility of losing so much of what defined him.

It was a "hallelujah moment" when Gil was able to face his demons after speaking with Dillon. Gil learned that all-important lesson about God's forgiveness and how to embrace His freedom by putting the past behind him. In so doing, he was able to see the bounty of God's provisions that lay right before his eyes.

I also really enjoyed the use of scripture and biblical application in the story. It never came across as preachy, just as a natural part of the person. I also appreciated the faults of the characters, making them more real and relatable.

I absolutely loved this book! I'm eager to read her next novel, "Seeds of Summer"! Keep up the great work, Deborah!
This is a clean, Christian romance. It really shows when an author writes about something they are familiar with or have researched. This is a good example of the positive of that statement. The solid foundation this book stands on in regards to ranching, riding, training, and caring for horses and the land and the loyal (some would say stubborn) mindset involved makes this story real. The Christian thread is smooth and solid and perfect for the location and characters. The editing has very few issues. I love it when you actually feel like you know the characters. I really enjoyed this one and will add it to my reread collection. I highly recommend this book.
