Newspaperman Dan Cameron gets a cool old typewriter for his 40th birthday. It once belonged to Ben Hecht, who used it to write the movie "Notorious." Dan uses it to write a best-seller. Then the Hecht estate says the typewriter was stolen and demands its return. As his lawyers fight in court, Dan and his wife, Erin, take off so he can get at least one more book out of the machine.
Bank robber Fetch McDonald is three weeks away from parole when his father brings bad news. Fetch's ex-wife, Verene, who still holds title to his heart, is going to remarry - in two weeks. One week before Fetch's release. With the help of his cousin, Lerome, Fetch breaks out. But the car Lerome has stolen breaks down. Right outside of Dan and Erin's cabin in the woods. The two desperados steal the Camerons' SUV. And Lerome, a quirky sort, steals Dan's typewriter and the only copy of his new novel.
Not long after that Fetch and an unlikely accomplice are duplicating the crimes described in Dan's novel. Dan and Erin have no choice but to join in the manhunt. If the court rules against Dan, what's he going to say? An escaped convict stole the typewriter? Yeah, right. Besides, Dan thinks there's a new book in tracking down the thieves.

A diverse bunch of characters, a book within a book, thieves stealing from each other...This is just a small taste of what this story has to offer. Writers will like this one. It also encompasses a typical cop attitude regarding most felons--that most of them are stupid. Oddly enough, many felons feel the same about law enforcement. This story hangs on the premise that superstition sometimes trumps logic. Like all Flynn novels, clever and engaging. These aren't books you read a bit at a time.
Another winner from Joseph Flynn. Great primary and secondary characters, totally different storyline, entertaining and fun. In fact, one of the secondary characters, Lerome, was so well done he almost eclipsed the main characters in the story, Dan & Erin. All of this action over a typewriter? Delightful!
Cleverly done, very enjoyable. Read it, you'll be glad you did.
Flynn does a great job of building his characters so the reader cares about every one of them. The plot twists and the story within the story work well. I admit I took my time reading this Flynn novel ( as opposed to his others) but this one will be the one I chuckle over and recommend to friends as a really great read.
I like everything Joe writes,the characters are real,the situations believable and the political ones don't make me angry with his point of view( I will not argue politics).But HOT TYPE was a whole different ball game,a heist story,a love story,two sets of people hooked up with the same story for two different reasons and an end to keep you guessing.What more can you ask for???
I've read a lot of books by some acclaimed author's and have not read any better than Joseph Flynn. Hot Type is up there with the best. Not many author's can intertwine three stories and make them seamless like this one. In comparison John Gresham is so one dimensional he would wish he could write this well. My hat is off to Joseph Flynn. Sir, I salute you.
Humorously twisty plot. The character development and tangled web kept me up to finish.

Hilarious. A great story well told. Very satisfying. Easily the best he has written. An adult comic book to be sure, but fun, fun, fun. Lots of inside jokes. Joseph Flynn must have busted a gut writing this.
