Samantha Graham (introduced in ‘Shelter During the Storm’) faces the challenges of starting a new consulting firm with her partner Jenna Johnson. A recent breakup from her cheating boyfriend confirms her beliefs that men cannot be trusted. That is until she meets a dark eyed stranger at a disaster conference in Chicago. Samantha allows herself one night with a man who makes her forget everything except the sexual energy between them. After an intense night of hot sex, Samantha disappears and goes home to focus on her business.
Allen Archer is furious with Samantha for leaving his hotel room without a trace. He wants more than a one-night stand from her and was angry that she didn’t feel the same way. He hires and private investigator to find her, but he’d probably have more success if he knew Samantha’s last name.
As luck would have it, the two lovers meet up again at one of the most unlikely places, a wedding. They struggle to find a way to make their long distance relationship work while others try to keep them apart by any means, including murder.

I have a lot of respect for the creativity and energy I imagine it takes to write a story. As such, I write my review with the respect of that and my honest perception of what I have read in mind. I love the basis of the story, about the African American heroine (h), Samantha, and the Asian hero (H), Allen, meeting, having an initial conflict, and accepting their attraction and love for each other sooner than later. I don't like stories with absurd amounts of conflict that could have been resolved with communication early and honestly. So, I like that this story didn't drag out any conflict.My primary issue with the story was the tone. In several parts, the writing was very stilted/choppy, which actually reminded me of a Dick and Jane story. For example, the author wrote, "...couple of blocks felt like a mile. Now she feels hot and sweaty. She is genuinely looking forward to the disaster conference...She's happy with the change in venue." In another part she writes, "Samantha's head rested on Allen's chest, their week together is almost over...She wants to stay in Seattle with Allen forever. She likes the state of Washington." I can honestly say that this writing style made the story sound very boring; so much so, that I started skipping every sex scene and jumped from mid-chapter 6 to the last chapter in the book.
Interestingly, a website that had an excerpt about choppy sentences may be of use to the author- and I honestly mean that respectfully. The website uses the following example to depict a choppy sentence structure and later uses alterations to those sentences to show how to minimize the chances of choppy sentences.
"Small sentences are boring to read. Many of them strung together look bad. They appear simple. Your thoughts look simple, too. It's like you can't sustain an idea for more than a few words. You can think in only trivial, simplistic ways. Small thoughts seem to come from small minds. You will leave your reader with the impression of simple-mindedness. Is that what you want?"
Then later, the excerpt recommends pushing the sentences together to make compound sentences linked by conjunctions and writes the following correction:
"Small sentences are boring to read and, in fact, many of them strung together look bad because they appear simple. If your thoughts look simple, it will seem like you can't sustain an idea for more than a few words and can think in only trivial, simplistic ways. Since small thoughts seem to come from small minds, you will leave your reader with the impression of simple-mindedness. Is that what you want?"
I appreciate the author for tackling an interracial romance story. Since I'm African American and my husband is Japanese, I am especially happy to find stories with Black women and Asian men as the central players. But, the stilted makeup of the sentences did not work well for me.

It's alright had a lot of potential but it just didnt make the cut lts of grammer errors and the way she had them talking to each other when they first met the conversation wasn't of two people just meeting and slip tight into sex.
but the author wrote like it was a narrative for a movie not even like in the 3rd person. the editing needed far more work and was a bit disconcerting when tenses of the words were not used properly... The story itself was good but needed more punch if the editing were tightened up and the book read more like the characters were interacting with each other instead of like someone was peering down at them explaining what they were doing it would have been better.
This story was a suprise since for unknown author the story is a "mixed bag." Get this story IF YOU LIKE MEN WHO TAKE CHARGE but still manage to show their vunerability and care to their mate. The story was intense and sexy so you have been warned either walk on by or bring a tall glass of ice water. The ONLY DOWNside to the story is knowing that this author has ONLY ONE OTHER book, so if you are like me this will break your heart (to be continued-I pray).
This is my first review. Here it goes I read until Chapter 10 and I just couldn't continue. I have read NUMEROUS books from and, needless to say, editing comes into play quite a bit. I ALWAYS overlook it if the story is compelling enough. However, this story just wasn't good enough to look past the lack of cohesive flow within the story. The story is written as though it is a huge set of stage directions for a play. (i.e., 'She sees him. She goes to him. They talk. She thinks he is handsome.') Going into reading the story, I had already read a review citing the oddity of tense the author chose to use. But I figured I could overlook it. Also, the editing was horrible missed periods to end sentences as well as many run-on sentences. And the main focus of the story was the sexual encounters of the two leads. I have no problem with sexual stories, but there was nothing else. The male lead seemed totally one dimensional and way too controlling, arrogant and possessive. I could go on, but I won't. I wouldn't recommend spending money for this story (which I already did). If you can read it for free, try it out, you might like it. Happy reading!
I really enjoyed this one. At first, I wasn't going to write the review because I couldn't figure out why I actually liked Allen. As the previous review said, he was conceited, opinionated, at times overbearing but she was right on another point too, he has it bad for Samantha - which I think made his behaviour forgiveable. And I love that despite his sometimes domineering behaviour toward others, she would not allow him to be that way with her. The sex scenes were hot - what you would expect from and 'alpha' and his lady. And the ending, the ending was so touching. It's not often I get to read a book and do the longing sigh...'Aaawwww' LOL. But it was so wonderful. The bit of drama kept it interesing for me as well. A great read.
This was a solid story. I did not read the first story in this series but I did not have too. This book picked up very well and with enough back story to keep me interested. I liked Allen. It was clear that he was a passionate man and very in love with Samantha. While he was totally an alpha male to the 10th power, I never felt he took advantage of Sam. In fact, I thought he was going to put her in a bubble so she would never be hurt again. Sam was very loving and strong willed. She was determined to make it on her own. Her friends and family made me love her even more the way they cared about her. I wanted Sam and Allen to be together and had to cool off after the love scenes. I enjoyed the banter back and forth and Allen telling every one that Sam was his. I wished the story was longer and the ending more fleshed out with Allen's family. Overall, this is a good read with a very warm and happy ending.
